Women Veterans and Suicide
Female veterans die by suicide at nearly six times the rate as women with no military service record.
Triggers for suicide include the high incidence of military sexual trauma and traumatic stress.
Caitlin Thompson, VA’s deputy director for suicide prevention, has said that women vets 18 – 29 were nearly 12 times more likely to commit suicide than other women.
The NVF’s Kristine Hesse agrees with Thompson that the outreach effort needs to be focused on these women.
Thompson, speaking of the VA’s campaign “The Power of 1,” said “One small act can change the life of a veteran.”
Hesse concurs, “I’ve seen it happen on our Lifeline and in our veterans outreach.”
