Women have a need to be part of a community, and this is especially true for women veterans who no longer have the military community that they previously had. Becoming a productive member of a women veterans community can help foster self-esteem, confidence, and a social network that can be invaluable.
Many female veterans have difficulty transitioning from military life to life as a civilian. Having the support and resources of community groups and local veteran organizations available can make an enormous difference in the sense of community that women veterans feel and how well they adjust to being a civilian.

Women Veterans Community Service Programs
After leaving the military many women vets struggle with loneliness, PTSD from exposure to past combat or sexual trauma as a result of their military service, raising a child as a single parent, and many other challenges. Community service programs can help women veterans give back and help others while also enriching their own lives and building a support network in their own community.
One way women veterans community members can find volunteer and community service opportunities is to visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Volunteer page. This page identifies volunteer opportunities by local area and VA facility. Every city and town may also have homeless shelters, food pantries, soup kitchens, charitable organizations, and veterans groups who are always looking for volunteers as well.
A quick online search can identify other community service and volunteer opportunities for women veterans. Many veterans tend to feel more comfortable when they engage with other vets in their own community, and there are many different veteran organizations and charities that are always in need of volunteers and assistance.
