William Nash Discusses Moral Distress in First Responders

survival boxesLast week I went out with my team to hand out survival boxes to the homeless on streets lined with make-shift shelters. The number of  homeless has grown exponentially since I first began scouring the streets for veterans in the 1970s. What I saw last week impacted me in a way that I didn’t understand until recently. Thanks to experts like Dr. William Nash, I recognize that that I am wrestling with moral distress.

Dr. William Nash, a colleague and leading pioneer in the prevention, recognition, and treatment of moral injury, continues to bring the concept of moral injury to the frontlines where we critical workers serve. His latest blog helps explain what human service workers experience as we attempt to serve during this time of the Covid-19 pandemic and provides answers as to how we as a society can protect those doing this difficult work against moral distress and burnout.
