Compensation and Pension

Disability Compensation is a tax-free benefit paid to a veteran for disabilities that are a result of or made worse by injuries or diseases that happened while on active duty, active duty for training, or certain inactive duty training. Disability compensation is also paid to certain veterans disabled from VA health care.

Pension is a benefit paid to wartime veterans who have limited or no income, and who are age 65 or older, or, if under 65, who are permanently and totally disabled.   Veterans who are more seriously disabled may qualify for Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits.    These are benefits that are paid in addition to the basic pension rate.

Survivors' Benefits

Dependency Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is a monthly benefit paid to eligible survivors of certain veterans. A survivor eligible for DIC may also be qualified for the Aid and Attendance or Housebound supplement. These supplements are paid in addition to the base payment, and provide a small additional income for persons who either needs assistance with everyday living tasks or are substantially confined to their home.

Death Pension is for the survivors of deceased wartime veterans. The pension is intended to provide a guaranteed miniumum income for the unremarried spouse and/or children who qualify. For example: If the spouse had a countable income of $6000 per year with no deductible medical expenses and 1 dependent child, in 2008 the VA would have provided $9,815 - $6000, or $3,815 paid in 12 equal monthly payments.

Life Insurance

VA life insurance programs were developed to provide insurance benefits for veterans and service members who may not be able to get insurance from private companies. There are different options available.
